I asked Tiffiney Holmes during the podcast about her thoughts on the current state of racial tension. I told her I didn’t know what to say because as a white woman who is deemed elitist and privileged–no matter what I say comes out wrong. She comforted me by replying, “Me, too!” Maybe that’s when all those verses on the tongue in Proverbs come in handy. My introverted, non-talking Man-in-Plaid would concur. His favorite – Proverbs 17:27, 28:
A truly wise person uses few words;
a person with understanding is even-tempered.
Even fools are thought wise when they keep silent;
with their mouths shut, they seem intelligent.
I remind him the verse says, they seem intelligent. He still won the first round.
Tiffiney said her aim is to share the Gospel first and foremost in all things. Before opening our mouths and sitting at our keyboards, to consider thoughtfully:
“After I share these words, can I turn around and share the Gospel? No? Then let me rephrase this or hold off altogether.”
That’s it. That’s the main thing: making sure the Gospel can slip right in. It doesn’t mean we pussy-foot around truth. Jesus himself caused quite a ruckus most places He went. I don’t think we hang back from giving the Good News. That even though disease and riots abound, God’s got a plan and it’s right on time. I do think we pray for grace and wisdom before hitting submit and, when necessary, graciously delete.
I wish my mouth had a DELETE or PAUSE button. My dental hygienist friend told me once — which wasn’t fair since she had her hand in my mouth while telling me — that I needed duct tape for these flappers. I took it in stride and didn’t bite down. Very hard.
What Tiffiney was saying was what Paul said. We put aside all else save what we are still here for: helping people find and follow Jesus. They would both say this is every believer’s legacy.
To the weak I became as the weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men, so that I may by all means in any and every way save some by leading them to faith in Jesus Christ.
And I do all this for the sake of the gospel, so that I may share in its blessings along with you.

Even when life is difficult.
Even when racial tensions are high and politics are ridiculous.
Even when children don’t come home or they are home too much.
We speak the truth in love.
We listen more than talk.
We serve more than talk.
We love more than talk.
We ask God for duct tape and make use of it.
